Ave Leila!

Ave Leila! What has happened to Paper Flowers? I am missing its banality.
I am currently doing anything, anything to not have to write about Abstract Expressionism. I am browsing through my phone's camera and have come across this which I think you might enjoy. The singing sounds like the dirge of Summer doesn't it? I hope it brings joy to your heart. I look forward to your next post and the revival of Paper Flowers in the near future.

Swishing loot

Last week Madame la Moue and I got a few lovely new things when we went to help the pupils of Patcham High School in Brighton hold a clothes swap. They were the students of my lovely friend Nancy, who had told them about swishing in their life-skills class.

They wanted to have a swish, so we said we'd help them and then we took all their clothes!  I JEST. Of course I do. It was a swish for the STAFF. We took THEIR clothes. Oh, only a few after everyone else had taken what they wanted, don't worry.

We thought we'd do a little photoshoot to show you our loot, but MLM won't let me post the photos of her, so you'll have to make do with the ones of me for now.

I don't know what cruelties MLM has perpetrated on cameras as a species in her past, but whatever it was, they haven't forgotten it. Cameras hate her. They love me, of course, but they hate MLM. It's all highly unfair.

Anyway, here is what I got:

V small floral print silk blouse: DKNY; wool skirt: Oasis; belt: from a previous swish; shoes: MLM's.

Silk chiffon blouse with suede ribbon: All Saints; Navy pinstripe culottes: Next; shoes and belt as above.

In other developments, we have very exciting news about our Valentine's Designer Swish at Pelham House in Lewes on 13th February. Lovely therapist Laura Baden-Powell will be giving complimentary 20 minute treatments to all swishers. Choose from an Indian head massage, a manicure or individual Ooh la la lash extensions! Tickets are limited, so book your place now!

Good day/bad day

Today was a bad day because: both my phones got cut off because I am too poor to pay my bills. Then the car wouldn't start. Then I missed Ness talking about vintage fashion at the Creative Fashion Forum because I got the time wrong...

Today was a good day because: I found 6 Basil Spence dining chairs next to a skip. Then My Swish was featured in Cath Kidston Magazine:

Maybe not so bad after all then... How was your day?

Birthday capers

Today is MM's birthday, so yesterday I planned a little surprise for him. With a little (okay, quite a lot) of help from Peter, who runs the truly remarkable ceremonies company, Light on Life, and also plays in MM's band.

We had a gorgeous lunch at Pelham House, during which MM, who had twigged that something was afoot, kept asking me why I kept getting text messages... Having detained him by spinning out a post-prandial coffee, we ambled down the hill to our local nature reserve, the Railway Land. MM, of course, tried to make mischief out of my now obvious, attempts to manoeuvre him, by suggesting that actually, he'd rather go and walk around the ruins of the old Priory instead...

Eventually, though, we walked into the woods to find the path lined with lanterns and candles, which led us to a fire in a clearing, where MM's friends were waiting to greet us:

We had champagne and cake around the fire, while friends recited limericks prepared in MM's honour. After some guitar strumming and singing, we made our way to the Snowdrop Inn, where more friends were waiting with drinks, more limericks and a crown and King's cape for MM to wear...

Later, a select group came back to MM's, where I had prepared a big vat of spiced lentil and parsnip soup and Serena had brought another vat of chilli beans with pasta. MM put on his beloved rare-groove funk records and much good conversation was enjoyed. What fun.

In other news, it's all go on the swishing front. Don't forget to book online to take advantage of the 3 for 2 offer on tickets for our 23rd January swish at Lansdowne Place in Hove.

If you came to one of our previous swishes, don't forget to enter our photograph competition: send a photo of your best swished outfit to by 22nd January and you could win a selection of scrumptious Mulu chocolate and free entry to a forthcoming swish of your choice!

Swishing news

Things have been all go here at My Swish Towers. Madame la Moue and I have been working hard in preparation for our New Year, New Wardrobe swish at the Lansdowne Place Hotel in Hove on 23rd January.

Tickets are going fast, so book now at to take advantage of our 3 for 2 offer while we still have places left.

Today we went to meet the lovely pupils of Patcham High school and their very stylish teacher, Ms Meaker, to tell them all about the joys of clothes swapping. They were so enthusiastic that we're going to help them put on a swish of their own in two weeks' time. In fact, we have so many more events coming up, that I've had to add a whole new 'Events Calendar' page to the My Swish website, just to keep up with them all...

We'll be having a special Valentines' Designer Swish at Pelham House in Lewes on 13th February, then on 11th March we're swishing at Sussex University as part of their 'Green Week'. Then, just today, the organisers of the fabulous-sounding Brighton and Hove Festival of Shopping emailed to ask us to organise a swish for them in April! I'm VERY excited about this one...

In the pipeline we also have plans for a vintage clothes swap as well as a gentlemen's swish. Watch this space, swishettes, because the swishes just keep on coming!

Speaking of things vintage, I was featured on the fabulous Vintage Brighton website the other day. Check it out here.

Merry Christmas!

Today I decorated my Mum's Christmas cake:

I made the roses out of ready-made icing rolled out and squidged into spirals, then poured some silver balls over it to make it a bit more jazzy...

I know: am artistic and domestic-science genius - you don't need to tell me (but don't let me stop you if you really want to). I am available for weddings, christenings and bar mitzvahs.

In background: snowy garden and barn. Brrrrr... Merry Christmas!

Tips on how to get your car through its MOT

Madame la Moue writes:

This is a short post with two purposes. Firstly so I can try to show this grey dress in a more positive light and secondly so I can share with you tips on how to get your car to pass its MOT. Since I swished this dress last Sunday I haven't worn anything else. It is SO cosy, perfect for this weather. It is like wearing a winceyette nightie all the time. I am wearing it here over swished leggings and swished beaded vest top, the modern day equivalent of thermal underwear. Warm as toast! On top I am wearing my GORGEOUS new cardi courtesy of the Red Cross charity shop in Lewes. (By the way there are some fabulous pink sequinned shoes in there that Mrs Maloo thought I should buy - why? Am not a drag queen, or is she trying to tell me something?) Actually she thinks we should start wearing full over the top evening dress to all our swishes. Yeah OK Mrs, we'll think about that one, do some brainstorming and then make an executive decision.

You cannot really tell from this fuzzy photo taken by Spoddy but the cardi has lovely polka dots on it. F & F would you believe? Tesco is so stylish these days.

So anyway regarding the MOT. My car's MOT is always due at Christmas when we are most skint. So yesterday before I took it to the garage the other half suggested I use my feminine wiles to try to get it to pass. Now I would not usually go along with such ideas but in these most difficult financial times I took a deep breath and went for it. I wore this dress and my most cleavage enhancing bra and leaving my coat open (despite the sub zeros temps) I sashayed up to the garage and engaged in some mild flirting with the nice MOT fella. And would you believe it THE CAR PASSED!!!!! It has NEVER EVER passed it's MOT in all the 7 years we have had it. Three cheers the LK Bennett dress!
